Brewer's yeast was familiar to me years before I finally tried it as a supplement. We get tired of popping so many pills so opted to try this in powder form [though it is available in other forms]. It is high in chromium so it helps regulate blood sugar, something our whole family needs to watch. It also contains a nice mix of protein, B vitamins, and some minerals making it a nice dietary addition.

We have had it on salads (where it isn't noticed), sprinkled on casseroles right before serving (where it isn't noticed), added to fruit smoothies (where it is seldom noticed - banana only 'might' allow a hint of taste through), and as a popcorn topping. The popcorn topping receives mixed reviews in this household, some like it, some don't. I hear it is an acquired taste.

CAVEATS:

If you are already taking chromium, combine these with care. Too much of a good thing isn't necessarily better. If you take insulin, please remember this can make you more sensitive to insulin so work with your doctor.

Some studies suggest chromium alters metabolism of serotonin, dopamine, and norepnephrine in the brain. Therefore it should be used only under a doctor's care by those suffering mood disorders or other brain chemical imbalance issues.

If you suffer from candidiasis, avoid this yeast product entirely. Use with care if you have a known allergy to molds.

Recommend: Yes
Pros:
A reasonably easy way to boost nutrition without much fuss or cost. Does help control blood sugar.

Cons:
Can have a bit of a bitter taste but it isn't a strong enough flavor to cause problems in most dishes.
